If you want real shade in a North Texas summer, choose a solid-roof patio cover. If you want a beautiful structure with filtered light, choose an arbor (also called a pergola). If your yard is sloped, has no usable patio, or you want a raised outdoor floor, choose a deck. Many of our customers in Denton County end up combining two, like a deck with an arbor over part of it.
Here’s how to decide, based on 35+ years of building all three around Highland Village, Flower Mound and Denton.
Quick comparison
| Patio cover | Arbor / pergola | Deck | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A roof over your patio | Open beams and rafters overhead | A raised wood or composite floor |
| Shade | Full | Partial, filtered | None by itself |
| Rain and hail protection | Yes | No | No |
| Best for | Summer use, outdoor kitchens, TV areas | Style, climbing plants, defining a space | Sloped yards, extending living space |
| Usually needs a permit | Yes | Often | Often, especially if raised |
When is a patio cover the right choice?
Choose a patio cover if you want to use your backyard from June through September. Dallas-area summers regularly top 100°F, and a solid roof keeps the space under it 15 to 25 degrees cooler than open sun. It also keeps your furniture, grill and TV safe from hail and afternoon storms. If you’re planning an outdoor kitchen, put it under a patio cover.
When is an arbor (pergola) the right choice?
Choose an arbor if you care most about looks and want some shade without closing in the sky. A cedar arbor frames a seating area, a hot tub or a walkway, and it’s a natural place for climbing vines like wisteria or crossvine. Be realistic about shade, though: open rafters cut the sun but won’t keep you cool at 3 p.m. in July. Adding a shade cloth or a polycarbonate top can help.
When is a deck the right choice?
Choose a deck if your yard slopes, your back door sits above ground level, or you don’t have a patio slab yet. Most North DFW lots are fairly flat, so many decks here are low, ground-level platforms rather than tall elevated decks. Composite decking handles the strong Texas sun better than wood and needs less upkeep. Wood feels more natural underfoot and can be stained to match your home.
Can I combine them?
Yes, and it’s often the best answer. Common combinations we build:
- Deck plus arbor: a ground-level deck with an arbor over the seating area.
- Patio cover plus open patio: shade near the house, open sky farther out for sunning and grilling.
- Patio cover plus outdoor kitchen: a solid roof with the grill, counter and fans underneath.
Patio cover, arbor and deck FAQ
What’s the difference between an arbor and a pergola? People use the words interchangeably. Strictly, an arbor is often smaller, like an arched entryway, and a pergola is larger and covers a seating area. We build both.
Will an arbor give enough shade in Texas? Partial shade only. For full shade in summer, a solid-roof patio cover works better. Shade cloth or a polycarbonate top can improve an arbor.
Which adds more value to my home? In DFW, a covered patio is what most buyers look for. A well-built deck or arbor still adds curb appeal and usable space.
Do I need HOA approval? In most Flower Mound, Highland Village and Lantana neighborhoods, yes. HOAs often set limits on height, setbacks and colors, so check before you finalize a design.
Wood or composite for a deck in North Texas? Composite lasts longer in our heat and sun with almost no maintenance. Wood has a natural look and can be stained, but needs resealing every few years.
